Explore the Fascinating World of Historical Reenactment

In this interview, Joshua William Chaletzos shares his passion for historical reenactment with Historia Normannis.

Joshua William Chaletzos is a member of the "Historia Normannis" a reenactment group from Coventry that specialises in life in Britain during the 12th century. The events are year-round and take place in many locations around the UK. Chaletzos talks about the complexities of reenactment and the challenges faced in the post-COVID era.

As an avid history fan, Chaletzos grew up near a mediaeval battlefield, which sparked his interest in reenactment and has since become a part of reenactment society with individuals who share the same interests. "The sense of community is there, and that's really what pulled me into it... I've become quite good friends with a lot of people because of it."

Immersion is key; from mediaeval villages to fierce battlefield encounters, reenactors such as Chaletzos pride themselves on learning about the workings and context of the past to accurately portray the period and the events of a bygone era, while creating theatrical performances that encourage the public to get stuck in and experience the lives of people from the past.

This hasn’t come without challenges, in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, recruitment for local groups has suffered and caused a high turnover rate. “The people that join are students. You'll have them for about three years while they do their course, and then they'll go home.” Adding to the pressure of dwindling participants, are concerns for public safety at events. However, reenactment communities persist, adapting to the changing landscape and finding innovative ways to engage new members while prioritising safety measures.

Reenactors like Chaletzos continue to keep the past alive and foster a sense of community, Chaletzos offers some advice. “A lot of reenactment societies, particularly mine, will go to fresher's fairs where we put on displays such as duels. They usually have online pages so just get in contact with them, and they’re happy to talk to new people. Find out what sort of period you want to do and just take it step by step.”
