Augmented Reality takes over the BFI Film Festival '23

A brief insight into the AR/VR exhibition at the BFI Film Festival '23.

The BFI Film Festival featured a free AR exhibition by artist Guy Maddin, which expanded upon last year's display. The film festival has always been a platform for showcasing innovative and boundary-pushing work, and Guy Maddin's AR exhibition is no exception. The exhibition converts 2D artworks into immersive and cinematic experiences. It combines art and technology, showcasing the potential of AR in shaping the future of art. As viewers explored the digital landscape, they went on a journey beyond passive viewing, immersing them in a new era of storytelling.

Talking to the Senior Production Coordinator of the exhibition, Harry Løvstrøm about the artworks. “It's all his (Guy Maddin's) personal collection of archives and collage. He made these pieces specifically for us… so you explore the different layers of collage and there are little secrets… it's beautiful work.”

The festival also exhibited artworks by other VR/AR artists spread across three floors. The exhibition was a must-see for anyone interested in the connection between art, technology, and cinema.
